The fishing at San Huberto is easily comparable to what you find in the American West, the difference is there are no other anglers around, as they only take 12 anglers a week. Wading the crystal clear Mallelo River and casting dry flys to rising Trout is what dreams are made of. The guides are equally adept at teaching beginners and experts alike. They speak perfect English and are the key to your success. Clients of all abilities often come back saying they learned more in a few days than they have in years of fishing in other areas. The Mallelo winds twenty plus miles through the property and there are some amazing spring creeks as well. The river is fed by Lago Tromen and has every kind of beat you can imagine, from wide open pebble bottom pools with views of the majestic Lanin volcano in the upper meadows to the tight willow lined stretches of the lower river and small lagoons. The Mallelo is best known for its consistent dry fly fishing throughout the season. Every month has its own unique hatches as the season progresses. From the January inchworm hatch in the willows that line the lower river to the Blue Wing Olives that dominate the Fall season in April. Fall is especially beautiful with cold nights and moderate days and the surrounding hills are covered in an explosion of colors. All fishing is done wading in knee to thigh deep water and the river is generally easy to walk and get around in. One of the great benefits to fly fishing in Argentina is that there is no public access to private property which ensures only the anglers at the lodge have any access to the fishing. The fish average 15-19 inches and you will frequently see larger fish rising selectively.
An added bonus to the river fishing is an afternoon trip to Lago Tromen 30 miles west of the lodge. The lake is amazingly beautiful and loaded with Rainbows and Browns, some of which can be large. The fish will take large attractor patterns on the surface and can’t resist an olive or black Woolly Bugger on a slowly falling sink tip. The shore is a perfect place for an afternoon picnic among thousand year old trees.
We can easily extend your trip to other nearby lodges to float amazing rivers like the Collon Cura or Alumine. The lodges are all great fun and offer their own unique experiences in beautiful country. Your guide(s) at San Huberto will accompany you on any extention and be there as your guide until you depart Patagonia. They all drive comfortable Toyota 4×4’s.
Other options to extend your trip would be to fish for Golden Dorado North of Buenos Aires, Jurassic Lake in Southern Patagonia for large Rainbow Trout or shooting doves in various areas of the country depending on when you are there.
The fishing starts in late November – early December and ends by mid-April.
December is the start of the Patagonian Summer and as the months roll by, when March arrives Fall begins with cooler nights and mild days.
San Huberto has 6 double rooms and 4 single rooms with en-suite bathrooms. They can accommodate 12 anglers per week as well and a few non-anglers. The lodge is spacious enough for everybody to have plenty of room even when the lodge is full. The ranch is 24,000 acres and a majority of the Mallelo runs through the property.
Your trip starts with an easy overnight flight from the US to Buenos Aires. All flights depart between 7:30 and 11 pm. There are daily flights from Houston, Dallas, Miami, New York and Atlanta. Once you clear customs at Ezeiza Airport our representative will meet the group and transfer everybody across town to Aeroparque Airport for the flight to Patagonia, or to the hotel if the group wants to overnight. The flight to San Martin is 2 hours, the outfitter will meet you at the airport and drive you an hour to the lodge.
No overnight in Buenos Aires is required; it’s up to the group if you’d like to see the city. If the group wants to arrive early and spend a night in Buenos Aires, we can easily facilitate that, book tours and dinner reservations.
If you prefer to charter it’s 2 hours on a jet and you can depart from Ezeiza airport. In that case the charter company will meet you outside of customs and drive you 10 minutes to the private hangars. We will add the cost of the lodge transfers / city transfers / tours (if required) to each shooter’s final invoice 2-3 months before departure. If you charter, we will add the cost to each angler’s invoice. The charter price varies by what aircraft is chosen. You can land in Buenos Aires in the morning and be in Patagonia by lunch time.
